In EnglishThe oldest metaphor in Indian love poetry — the eye as a snare — sung by Amirbai Karnataki for a courtesan who will one day walk out of every bond she owns.

The Monographपरिचय Overview

One of the six Amirbai Karnataki numbers documented for Amrapali (1945). The title invokes naino ke bandhan — the bondage of the eyes — the standard figure by which Hindi and Braj love poetry describes falling into desire through a single glance. Placed inside a story whose subject is renunciation, the phrase carries an extra charge: the bond of the eyes is the first of the ties the heroine will eventually have to cut.
The Music

Medium-tempo and vocal-forward, in the manner Saraswati Devi kept through her freelance years: a stable rhythmic bed, restrained accompaniment, and the melody handed over to the singer. Amirbai Karnataki's timbre — full and slightly grainy, trained on the thumri-adjacent light-classical repertoire — was the reason producers of the mid-1940s cast her in exactly this kind of interior, first-person number.
The Poetry

Bandhan is a stronger word than the English 'bond': it is what ties a bundle shut, and in the devotional vocabulary it is precisely what a seeker is trying to escape. Kavi Pradeep is using a love-song idiom while keeping one foot in that older register, so the same line reads as a lover's complaint and as a statement about attachment itself. That double reading is what makes the song belong to this film rather than to any romance.
The Story

Amrapali (1945) was directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal for Murli Movietone and drew on the legend of Amrapali of Vaishali, the celebrated nagarvadhu of the Licchavi republic who, in the traditional account, renounced her position and gave her mango grove and fortune to the Buddha's order. Sabita Devi, Prem Adib, Jeevan, Arun, Jagdish Sethi, Badri Prasad, Gulab and Sankatha Prasad are the documented cast. Saraswati Devi composed eleven songs for the picture to lyrics by Kavi Pradeep — one of the few soundtracks she wrote after leaving Bombay Talkies.
The Legacy

Not part of the 1940s repertoire that later reissue programmes kept alive; it survives in the film-song catalogues rather than in circulation. Its documentary interest lies in Amirbai Karnataki's peak period — she recorded prolifically between Kismet (1943) and the end of the decade, and this soundtrack is one of the less-examined corners of that run.

Amirbai Karnataki (1906–1965) is credited as the singer on six of Amrapali's eleven documented songs, which makes the album effectively hers. She was among the most-recorded female voices of wartime Bombay, in the seasons just before Lata Mangeshkar's arrival changed the field.

The film dramatises the legend of Amrapali of Vaishali — the nagarvadhu or 'bride of the city' of the Licchavi republic, said to have given away her mango grove and her entire fortune to the Buddha's order after hearing him preach.
