मेरा सुंदर सपना बीत गया

Do Bhai (1947) launched two careers simultaneously: S.D. Burman's as a major Bombay film composer, and Geeta Roy's (later Geeta Dutt) as one of Hindi cinema's most distinctive female voices. 'Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya' was the song that announced both. Burman's melody draws on Bengali baul and folk traditions — open, pentatonic, with a characteristic catch in the phrase rhythm. Geeta Roy's voice, seventeen and newly arrived in Bombay, had a smoky quality that no training could manufacture.

Burman's arrangement is deliberately simple — flute and strings, folk-inflected rhythm, no elaborate orchestration. The openness is itself the statement: a sound from Bengal, uncompromising, asking Bombay to meet it on its own terms.

Raja Mehdi Ali Khan's lyric is among the most direct in Hindi film poetry — no Urdu circumlocutions, no elaborate metaphors. 'My beautiful dream is over' is the whole statement. The directness has lasted.

In the film, the song accompanies a moment of loss — a character coming to terms with hope defeated. In musical history, it is the opposite: the beginning of everything for both composer and singer.

Do Bhai's 'Mera Sundar Sapna' established the Burman–Geeta Dutt axis that would produce some of Hindi cinema's most lasting work through the 1950s, particularly in Guru Dutt's films. The song itself remains one of the best-loved sad songs of the late 1940s.
