This kajri rides the form's classic frame: the bride aching to join the monsoon games, the sister-in-law as witness and tease. Janki Bai's Sawan sides were annual events — her enormous voice scaled to the kajri's swing, Pilu shading the playfulness with ache, the keherwa keeping the swing-rope rhythm.

The question 'how will you go play?' is rhetorical and rebellious at once — the clouds have gathered, the festival calls, and between the woman and the rain stands the household's gaze. Kajri's genius is to make the obstacle itself the confidante: it is the nanad who is addressed, the nanad who will be won over.

Record companies timed kajri releases to reach the bazaars before Sawan, and Janki Bai — a Gramophone Company star since 1907 — delivered the season's sides year after year. The 1915 catalogue, thinned by wartime shellac and shipping constraints, leaned all the harder on such guaranteed sellers.

This mukhda remained core kajri repertoire through the century — a fixture of Banaras-Mirzapur singing later carried to the concert stage by the great Purab-ang women. Early discs like Janki Bai's fixed its shape a generation before radio.
