Overview

The best-rated of the six Amirbai Karnataki songs documented for Amrapali (1945), 'Is Duniya Ki Pagdandi Par' takes the didactic-philosophical line that Kavi Pradeep made his own across the 1940s: the world imagined not as a highway but as a pagdandi, the thin unpaved track between fields that a traveller walks alone. Saraswati Devi sets it slowly, in the reflective register that suits a costume picture built around renunciation.

The Music

Slow-tempo composition in Saraswati Devi's characteristically uncluttered manner — she was a Bhatkhande-trained classicist who habitually left the melodic line exposed rather than crowding it with orchestration, and the walking, unhurried gait of this song is the point of it. Amirbai Karnataki's straight, unornamented delivery carries the didactic text without dramatising it.

The Poetry

The image in the title does the work. A pagdandi is not a road anyone built — it is the track worn by feet that went before, too narrow for two abreast. To place 'this world' on such a path is to say that the journey is inherited, solitary and unmarked, which is exactly the frame the Amrapali story needs before its heroine gives everything away. Pradeep's vocabulary here is deliberately village-Hindi rather than Urdu-inflected, the choice that made his songs legible to audiences far outside the cities.

The Story

Amrapali (1945) was directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal for Murli Movietone and drew on the legend of Amrapali of Vaishali, the celebrated nagarvadhu of the Licchavi republic who, in the traditional account, renounced her position and gave her mango grove and fortune to the Buddha's order. Sabita Devi, Prem Adib, Jeevan, Arun, Jagdish Sethi, Badri Prasad, Gulab and Sankatha Prasad are the documented cast. Saraswati Devi composed eleven songs for the picture to lyrics by Kavi Pradeep — one of the few soundtracks she wrote after leaving Bombay Talkies.

The Legacy

The song survives as a catalogue entry rather than as a living record — like the rest of Amrapali's soundtrack it never entered the standard 1940s revival repertoire, and the film itself is not known to be in circulation. Its value now is documentary: it is one of the clearest surviving samples of the Saraswati Devi–Kavi Pradeep pairing, which produced only a small body of work.

Margin Notes

Saraswati Devi — born Khorshed Minocher-Homji in 1912 to a Parsi family and trained in Hindustani classical music under Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande — is usually named the first woman to work as a music director in Hindi cinema, though Jaddanbai and Bibbo were composing in the same years. Amrapali is one of her freelance assignments after her Bombay Talkies years, which had produced the landmark score for Achhut Kanya (1936).

Amirbai Karnataki (1906–1965) is credited as the singer on six of Amrapali's eleven documented songs, which makes the album effectively hers. She was among the most-recorded female voices of wartime Bombay, in the seasons just before Lata Mangeshkar's arrival changed the field.
