The song bridges the film's literary world (Urdu printing press, aged poet) with its Sufi philosophical underpinnings.

Vishal Bhardwaj's arrangement for Hum Fanaa is the most classical on the Gustaakh Ishq EP: sarangi leads, supported by tabla and harmonium, with strings entering sparingly. The 6:15 duration allows the song to pass through multiple formal sections — invocation, development, extended improvisation-like passages — in a structure closer to a classical composition than a film song. Javed Ali's gamak and meend ornaments are allowed full expression.

Gulzar's use of 'fanaa' — the Sufi concept of self-annihilation in the divine — in a film about a young man's love for an older poet's daughter creates a theological argument: that human love, at its most consuming, replicates the mystic's experience. The lyric moves in couplets that accumulate like a ghazal.

Hum Fanaa was recorded last of the Gustaakh Ishq tracks, after Vishal Bhardwaj had lived with the film's story for several months. He has spoken about wanting the album's closing piece to feel like the answer to the opening question of Ul Jalool Ishq — if love is absurd, Hum Fanaa suggests it is worth being absorbed by that absurdity completely.

Hum Fanaa is the finest achievement on the Gustaakh Ishq EP — a six-minute Sufi-classical-romantic synthesis that stands among the most ambitious songs in Vishal Bhardwaj's filmography. Javed Ali's performance here may be his career high.
