होरी के बोल हर वसंत वही मीठा झगड़ा रचते हैं: रंग फेंका गया, मान झूठा रूठा, समर्पण की शर्तें तय हुईं। तवायफ़ की महफ़िल में यह विधा सामाजिक वाग्विलास भी थी — गायिका कृष्ण से जितना कहती, महफ़िल से उतना ही।

बनारस की हुस्ना जान — हारमोनियम-उस्ताद भैया गणपत राव की मंडली से जुड़ी — 1900 के दशक के मध्य से तवों पर थीं। बनारसी गायिकाओं की उनकी पीढ़ी ग्रामोफ़ोन का ऋतु-कैटलॉग भरती थी: वसंत की चैती, बरसात की कजरी, फागुन की होरी। 1920 तक ऐसे तवे दुकानों में नए नाट्य-संगीत और गौहर जान के अंतिम तवों के साथ सजते थे।

Husna Jaan of Benares — disciple of the harmonium master Bhaiya Ganpat Rao's circle — had been on disc since the mid-1900s. Her generation of Benares singers supplied the gramophone's seasonal catalogue: chaiti for spring, kajri for the rains, hori for Phagun. By 1920 such sides shared shop space with the new natya-sangeet and the last Gauhar Jaan releases.
