हर दिल में मुसीबत है

Amirbai Karnataki's only solo in Samrat Chandragupta, set apart from her two duets with G. M. Durrani. 'Har dil mein museebat hai' — every heart holds a trouble — generalises private grief into a shared condition, which is the standard consolation move of the film lament and the reason such songs travelled beyond their films.

Amirbai Karnataki came to Bombay playback from a Karnataka stage and gramophone background, and her voice — firm, slightly nasal, carrying without strain — was built for exactly this kind of unaccompanied-sounding declarative line. In 1945 she was one of the two or three most recorded female voices in the industry, and a lament placed with her rather than with the film's young star was a deliberate allocation of weight within the soundtrack.

'Museebat' is a heavier word than the film-lyric default 'gham' or 'dard': it means calamity, hardship, trouble that has arrived from outside rather than sorrow felt within. Placing it in 'har dil' — every heart — turns the line from a complaint into an observation about the world, a move that in 1945 also carried an unstated social charge, coming three years after the Bengal famine and in the last year of a war economy. Nothing in the documented material says the song was written to be read that way; but the register was available, and audiences of the period were practised at hearing it.

Samrat Chandragupta (1945) was produced and directed by Jayant Desai for Jayant Desai Productions, the Bombay banner he founded in 1943 after fourteen years at Ranjit Studios. It is a large-scale historical about Chandragupta Maurya, founder of the Mauryan empire, built around the legend of his break with Alexander's Macedonians and his marriage to the daughter of the Greek general Seleucus Nicator. Ishwarlal, Renuka Devi, Suraiya, Nayampalli, Sulochana Chatterjee and Mubarak headed the cast; the screenplay was by Mohanlal G. Dave, Shaheed Latif and Sagar Hussain, and Dronacharya photographed it. C. Ramchandra — signing himself Chitalkar Ramchandra at this stage of his career — composed all ten documented songs to lyrics by Buddhi Chandra Agrawal 'Madhur', two years before Shehnai (1947) made him a household name.

Amirbai Karnataki's standing collapsed faster than almost any of her contemporaries': the most in-demand female playback voice of the early 1940s was working only sporadically by the early 1950s, displaced by Lata Mangeshkar's arrival and by the industry's shift in preferred vocal timbre. Solos like this one, scattered across small and now-lost 1945 productions, are much of what remains as evidence of the range she was given while she was at the top.
