The Monographपरिचय Overview

Cut within months of her last acoustic sides, Indubala's first electric thumris read like a controlled experiment: the ornament loosens, dynamics appear, the voice steps back from the horn's shout into conversation. The pair of years 1925–26 in one singer's catalogue is the clearest before/after in Indian recording.
The Music

Microphone intimacy enters the thumri — the style's future (Rasoolan, Siddheshwari on disc) is audible here first.
The Poetry

The Story

When the Western Electric electrical recording system arrived at HMV's Indian operations circa 1926, Indubala was one of the first artists to use it — and the contrast with her 1925 acoustic sides provides what music historians have called the clearest single-artist before-and-after document in Indian recording history. In acoustic sessions she had mastered 'horn singing': voice projected hard, ornament reduced, phrasing shaped by the need to stay at a fixed distance from the horn. The microphone freed her entirely from these constraints. The 1926 electric sides show a thumri singer who can now whisper a 'meend' (a glide between notes), let a phrase trail away naturally, and use the full dynamic range from soft to strong within a single line. Contemporary account in the Calcutta press noted the difference immediately. For Indubala's audience the new sides sounded like a different intimacy — closer to the salon experience the thumri tradition was born in than anything that had previously been possible on disc. The sessions also appear to have been more relaxed: the freedom from the horn allowed artists to adjust posture and breathing naturally, and the electric sides generally contain fewer retakes per finished side than the acoustic sessions.

The Western Electric 'Orthophonic' electrical recording system, introduced in the United States in 1925, extended the recordable frequency range from roughly 200–2,400 Hz (acoustic) to 60–6,000 Hz — a transformation that allowed both the bass warmth and the high ornament of classical Indian singing to be captured for the first time.

Indubala's recording career with HMV ran from approximately 1913 to the 1960s — one of the longest in Indian music history — meaning she worked across acoustic, electrical 78rpm, and LP technologies within a single career.

The thumri tradition she recorded was primarily of the 'Purab ang' (Eastern style) associated with the Benares and Lucknow schools, distinguished from the 'Punjabi ang' by its slower, more internally ornamented phrasing — qualities that gained greatly from electrical recording.

Gauhar Jaan, Indubala's guru, died on 17 January 1930 in Mysore; Indubala's 1926 electric sides were among the recordings she made while her guru was still alive, making them part of a shared living tradition rather than a posthumous tribute.

Several of Indubala's electric 78rpm sides were reissued on HMV's 'Golden Series' LP compilations in the 1970s, introducing her voice to listeners two generations removed from her original audience.
