Overview

This is the sorrowful reprise of 'Dil Tu Hi Bata De' in Sharbati Ankhen (1945), on the same Tanveer Naqvi lyric and the same Feroz Nizami tune as the happy version. What makes it worth a separate entry is the credit: Atul's Song A Day, working from Hindi Film Geet Kosh, records that the sad take went to Amirbai Karnataki while the happy one went to Hamida Banu. Twin versions almost always stay with one singer, so a deliberate change of voice between the two is a small production decision worth noticing — though the hindigeetmala catalogue disagrees and gives both to Hamida Banu.

The Music

Twin versions of one melody — a 'happy' and a 'sad' take of the same tune — were a standard device of 1940s Bombay scoring. In the standard use of the device the bright setting comes first and the tune returns after the story has turned, so that the audience registers the reversal through the music before the dialogue explains it; where the two versions actually fall in this particular film is not recorded anywhere. Because both sides were pressed and catalogued separately, the two versions survive in the record lists as distinct songs, which is why they are documented here as two entries rather than one.

The Poetry

Nothing in the words changes between the two versions; what changes is who is left holding them. 'Dil tu hi bata de' asks the heart to adjudicate, and in the bright version that is a flirtation — the question is rhetorical, the answer already known. Sung after the reversal, the identical line becomes an accusation: the heart chose this, the heart can now explain itself. This is the specific economy of the double-version song, and the reason Hindi cinema used it so heavily for two decades: one lyric, two opposite meanings, and no new writing required. Tanveer Naqvi's line is spare enough to carry both without strain.

The Story

Amirbai Karnataki was by 1945 one of the busiest playback voices in Bombay, having become a household name after Kismet (1943), and she was singing across studios in a year when she also appears on soundtracks such as Gaon Ki Gori. A single number in a modest Wadia Movietone social picture was routine work for her, which is part of why the credit is easy to lose: a well-known singer's one-song appearances in small films are exactly the entries that fall out of the standard discographies. The film, directed by Ramchandra Thakur, has left no synopsis or stills behind.

The Legacy

The entry survives mainly as a data point in an unresolved credit dispute, and that is worth saying plainly rather than dressing up. Two catalogues built on the same underlying source disagree about who sang this side of the record, and no audio has surfaced to settle it. Cases like this are the ordinary condition of 1945: the year is documented well enough to name every song, and not well enough to be sure who sang half of them.

Margin Notes

Twin 'happy' and 'sad' versions of one tune were normally sung by the same voice; here the catalogue records a change of singer between the two takes, which is a rare arrangement.

Amirbai Karnataki had become a household voice after Kismet (1943) and by 1945 was recording across several Bombay studios in the same year.

Two independent catalogues disagree on this credit: Atul's Song A Day names Amirbai Karnataki for the sad version, hindigeetmala names Hamida Banu. No surviving audio has yet settled the question.
