The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Badnaam Mohabbat Kaun Kare' is among the most frequently cited songs of Dost (1944), a Noor Jehan solo on the defiance of a love that refuses to be shamed. Written by Shams Lakhnavi and composed by Sajjad Hussain in his debut as an independent music director, it was one of the soundtrack's hits.
The Music

Sajjad Hussain's debut score is remembered for tunes that reward repeated listening rather than instant hummability; this number lets Noor Jehan's voice carry an emotionally charged ghazal line over a sparse, classically poised accompaniment.
The Poetry

'Badnaam Mohabbat Kaun Kare' (Who would give love a bad name?) is a defiance lyric: the rhetorical question stands as the song's argument. The word 'badnaam' (disgraced, given a bad name) positions love as socially contested, subject to the censure of conventional morality. In the Urdu literary tradition this is the classic stance of the 'majnun' — the divinely maddened lover — who courts social shame as proof of the love's absolute depth: love that can be dishonoured by opinion is not worth the name. Shams Lakhnavi's lyric deploys a form common in Urdu ghazal: the proposition stated in the first line ('who would dishonour love?'), with the implied answer being 'no one who truly loves'. The rhetorical question addresses both the audience and the unseen moral authority that would condemn the love — it is simultaneously a challenge and a declaration. Noor Jehan's fully voiced, rich contralto delivery gave this defiant stance particular authority and conviction rather than mere complaint. Full lyrics withheld; analysis based on the title, documented genre (Ghazal), and Shams Lakhnavi's documented lyrical style.
The Story

Dost (1944) was directed by Shaukat Hussain Rizvi for Navin Pictures and was the debut film of Sajjad Hussain as an independent music director. Sajjad had trained on sitar under his father and was additionally accomplished on veena, violin, flute, piano, and mandolin — a multi-instrumental command unusual in the era. He had spent previous years as an assistant to senior composers and as a contract instrumentalist in Bombay. Dost starred Noor Jehan — who was the director's wife and, by 1944, one of the most sought-after female vocalists in Hindi cinema — alongside Motilal and Agha. 'Badnaam Mohabbat Kaun Kare' is documented as one of the film's three hit songs, alongside 'Koi Prem Ka De Ke Sandesa' and 'Alam Par Alam Aur Sitam Par Sitam'. The film ranked 21st in Box Office India's list of top-earning Hindi films of the entire 1940s decade. The backstage story of the film is also significant: when director Rizvi publicly credited the musical success to Noor Jehan rather than to Sajjad, the composer reportedly vowed never to work with Noor Jehan again.
The Legacy

Sajjad Hussain's career was one of Hindi film music's most talent-rich and under-realised: despite composing fewer than twenty film scores over thirty-four years — largely due to his famously uncompromising temperament — he was considered by many peers as one of the most original melodists the industry ever produced. His debut songs from Dost (1944) are among his most accessible work, showing a composer who could match Noor Jehan's vocal authority with melodies that rewarded close listening. Lata Mangeshkar named him as her favourite composer in a 2012 interview. 'Badnaam Mohabbat Kaun Kare' is the most frequently cited of Dost's songs in historical surveys of 1940s Hindi film music, valued both for the quality of Shams Lakhnavi's lyric and for the symbiosis between Sajjad's classical-inflected arrangement and Noor Jehan's defiant delivery.
