Saraswati Cinetone's Awara Shehzada (1933), directed by Master Vithal with music by Annasaheb Mainkar, starred Shahu Modak in what is documented as one of the first double roles in Hindi talkie cinema — playing both a prince and a pauper who are doppelgangers. The double-role narrative required songs that could register the contrasting registers of the two characters — the prince's courtly elegance and the pauper's rough popular idiom — and their eventual comedic and romantic confusion.
