Bairavam is a janya of Mayamalavagowla (15th melakarta, Carnatic), which is the exact equivalent of Hindustani Bhairav thaat: Sa R1 G3 M1 P D1 N3 Sa. The characteristic phrase employs gamaka-laden movement on komal Re (R1) and komal Dha (D1) — the two intervals that define the Bhairav colour. The raag's identity is established by these two komal swaras in the context of a serene, early-morning unfolding.

Vadi–Samvadi note

Vadi — In the Carnatic tradition, Raag Bairavam emphasizes Pancham (Pa) as a key resting note.

Samvadi — Sa (Shadj) serves as the complementary note.

Historical Significance

Raag Bairavam is a Carnatic janya raag derived from the 15th melakarta, Mayamalavagowla, which occupies the second chakra ('Netra') of Venkatamakhin's 72-melakarta scheme codified in the Chaturdandi Prakashika (1660 CE). The Hindustani exact equivalent of the Mayamalavagowla scale is Bhairav thaat: Sa, Komal Re (R1), Shuddha Ga (G3), Shuddha Ma (M1), Pa, Komal Dha (D1), Shuddha Ni (N3). Mayamalavagowla is one of the most ancient and architecturally important melakartas — it is the scale from which the venerable Carnatic kriti tradition derives some of its earliest compositions, and Muthuswami Dikshitar (1775–1835), one of the Carnatic trinity, used it as the foundation for several of his Navagraha kritis. Bairavam as a janya maintains all seven notes (sampurna jati) with gamakas particularly emphasized on R1 and D1, the intervals that give the Bhairav sound-world its austere, dawn-before-sunrise quality. In South Indian temple practice, ragas in this thaat are performed during brahma muhurta (pre-sunrise hours) and are associated with Shiva abhisheka and Vishnu Suprabhatam liturgical chanting. Bairavam's name echoes both 'Bhairav' and the Malayalam/Tamil nominal form '-am', confirming its South Indian articulation of the same parent concept as North India's Bhairav.

In Film Music

Raag Bairavam has no documented presence as a named raag in Hindi film music. The aesthetic it embodies — early-morning, austere, spiritually expansive — has been served in Hindi films primarily by Raag Bhairav (its Hindustani cousin), which has generated numerous memorable dawn compositions. In Tamil and Telugu cinema, the Mayamalavagowla/Bairavam aesthetic has been employed by composers such as M. S. Viswanathan and Ilaiyaraaja in devotional contexts, but these would be under the Carnatic melakarta name rather than 'Bairavam'. No verified Bairavam-based Hindi film song is on record.
