Gowri (Gauri), parent raag of Amritha Gowri, is a janya of Mayamalavagowla (mela 15), which uses komal Rishabha, shuddha Gandhara, shuddha Madhyama, Panchama, komal Dhaivata, and shuddha Nishada — the Bhairav thaat note set in Hindustani terms. The characteristic ascending-descending movement given here reflects the Mayamalavagowla family scale. The juxtaposition of komal Re with shuddha Ga is the defining tonal color, creating the grave, stately quality characteristic of Bhairav. This is a family characteristic phrase from the melakarta scale.

Historical Significance

Raag Amritha Gowri is a Carnatic janya raag derived from the celebrated Gowri (or Gauri) raag, with 'Amritha' (Sanskrit: amrita — immortal, nectar) added to signal a transcendent, eternal quality. Gauri is one of the most revered names in Hindu tradition — a primary name of Parvati, the consort of Shiva, whose name means 'the fair/radiant one' and signifies the feminine divine energy in its benign, luminous form. In Carnatic music, Gauri (Gowri) raag is classified as a janya of Mayamalavagowla (mela 15, chakra 3 — Agni chakra), one of the foundational melakartas in the Carnatic system. Mayamalavagowla uses komal Rishabha, shuddha Gandhara, shuddha Madhyama, Panchama, komal Dhaivata, and shuddha Nishada — a note set corresponding to the Bhairav thaat in Hindustani music. The raag carries a grave, devotional, and majestically serene character befitting its namesake. 'Amritha Gowri' elevates this devotional essence with the nectar of immortality.
