Synopsis

Amar is a gifted but destitute street musician whose voice earns him neither money nor love — until circumstance and passion collide in Calcutta's lanes. He sings to survive, sings to woo, and ultimately sings himself into legend. The film's climax staged the thumri 'Babul Mora' live on camera — Saigal performing directly before the lens rather than to pre-recorded playback — making it the last great document of the actor-singer era.

The Soundtrack

Pankaj Mullick's score integrates the classical thumri tradition directly into film narrative for the first time at this scale — 'Babul Mora' presented not as interpolation but as character revelation.

Behind the Scenes

Saigal sang 'Babul Mora' directly before the camera — no playback track, no dubbing — in the tradition established before 1935. Phani Majumdar staged the scene so that the song's text (the nawab's lament of exile) mirrors Amar's own longing, fusing historical elegy with screen drama.

Significance

Street Singer is the summit of the New Theatres musical drama and the documentary record of K.L. Saigal at his peak. Its soundtrack contains 'Babul Mora' — the 1856 thumri of the exiled Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, sung live on screen — anchoring a century of artistic tragedy in six minutes of cinema. The film also marked Kanan Devi's definitive partnership with Saigal and Pankaj Mullick's mature command of the New Theatres sound.

Legacy

Street Singer remains the canonical Saigal film for every subsequent generation. 'Babul Mora' became the single most-covered thumri of the 20th century — sung by Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Begum Akhtar, Lata Mangeshkar, and dozens more, each generation returning to the same six lines that Wajid Ali Shah sang the night he left Lucknow.
