A 1944 production directed by Phani Majumdar that cast a young Chetan Anand — until then a Doon School teacher with a screenwriting ambition — as its leading man opposite Nargis. The project grew out of a script Anand had written about the life of Emperor Ashoka, which he showed to Majumdar in Bombay. Though it gave Anand his entry into cinema, the film is believed to have never been released and survives only as a footnote in his biography.

तब डून स्कूल में पढ़ा रहे चेतन आनंद ने सम्राट अशोक पर एक पटकथा लिखी थी और उसके लिए निर्माता ढूँढने बॉम्बे गए थे। निर्देशक फणी मजूमदार — कलकत्ता-शैली के फ़िल्मकार जिन्होंने स्ट्रीट सिंगर (1938) और मोहब्बत (1943) बनाई थीं — इतने प्रभावित हुए कि दिसंबर 1943 में उन्होंने आनंद को ही राजकुमार के नायक के रूप में चुना, उन्हें नर्गिस के साथ जोड़ा और आठ सौ रुपये मासिक वेतन पर रखा।

Chetan Anand, then teaching at the Doon School, had written a screenplay on Emperor Ashoka and travelled to Bombay to find a producer for it. Director Phani Majumdar — a Calcutta-school filmmaker who had made Street Singer (1938) and Mohabbat (1943) — was impressed enough to cast Anand himself as the hero of Rajkumar in December 1943, pairing him with Nargis and putting him on a monthly salary of Rs. 800.

It marked Chetan Anand's first paid engagement in the film industry (a salary of Rs. 800 per month), drawing him from Dehradun into Bombay's film world. Within two years of this unreleased experiment he would direct Neecha Nagar (1946), the first Indian film to win the Grand Prix at Cannes.
