A bilingual (Hindi–Marathi) social drama from Jeevan Pictures, Bombay, directed by G. P. (Ganapatrao) Pawar with a score by C. Balaji. As its title 'Paisa' (money) suggests, the film belongs to the social-reform melodrama tradition of pre-Independence Marathi-Hindi cinema, examining the corrosive power of wealth on human relationships. Documentation of its plot is thin, but the production is notable as one of only two Hindi films scored by the short-careered composer C. Balaji.
The Soundtrackसंगीत सी.

The soundtrack was composed by C. Balaji, for whom Paisa was only his second (and final) Hindi film after Raja Gopichand (1938). Among its songs, the one with confirmed credits is 'Aaye Re Piya Chamak Damak', rendered by Indira Wadkar. A complete, documented track-list for the film has not survived in accessible reference sources, and individual lyricist credits remain unestablished.

Behind the Scenes

Paisa was produced as a bilingual — shot in both Hindi and Marathi — a common cost-sharing strategy at Bombay's Marathi-rooted studios of the period. The cast drew on Marathi stage and screen talent, including Shakuntala Paranjpye, for whom this was among her last Hindi appearances, and the stage actress Vimal Ghaisas. G. P. Pawar directed.
Significance

Paisa (1941) is widely cited as the first Hindi film to carry the word 'Paisa' as the very first word of its title — a small but oft-repeated piece of trivia in Hindi-cinema chronology. Beyond this, the film is significant as a rare surviving credit for music director C. Balaji (born Balaji Gopal Chougule, 1913), who scored only two Hindi films across his career.
Legacy

As a piece of pre-Independence regional-bilingual cinema, Paisa survives today mainly through gramophone-era references and song archives rather than a circulating print. Its enduring footnote in film history is the 'first Hindi film whose title begins with the word Paisa' distinction, and its place in the slim filmography of composer C. Balaji.
