A 1943 Hindi social melodrama directed by the actor-producer Nazir, with Prithviraj Kapoor and the great Kathak dancer-actress Sitara Devi heading the cast. Its lasting interest lies less in its plot than in its music: the score is one of the very few film soundtracks composed by the Hindustani flute maestro Pannalal Ghosh, set to lyrics by Hasrat Lakhnavi, with Sitara Devi singing most of the numbers herself.

Pannalal Ghosh composed the score with lyrics by Hasrat Lakhnavi. Eight songs are documented; Sitara Devi sings six of them, with the comedian Gope contributing the topical number 'Line Se Bahar Baat Na Karna'. Given the composer's identity as one of India's foremost classical flautists, the songs lean on melodic, raga-tinged lines rather than the rhythm-forward Punjabi idiom then sweeping the industry.

Sitara Devi

Behind the Scenes

1943 was a busy year for the actor-director Nazir, who was also relaunching the Hind Pictures banner with Sitara Devi as a creative partner. Bhalai belongs to this cluster of Nazir–Sitara Devi collaborations of the year, and is distinguished within it by the rare film-scoring credit for flautist Pannalal Ghosh.
Significance

Bhalai is chiefly notable for its composer: Pandit Pannalal Ghosh, the bansuri virtuoso who elevated the bamboo flute to concert classical status, scored only a handful of films, and Bhalai is among them. The soundtrack is built around Sitara Devi, who renders six of its eight songs, making the film a document of her singing voice alongside her famed dancing.
Legacy

Today Bhalai survives mainly as a line in the discographies of Pannalal Ghosh and Sitara Devi — a reminder that the flute maestro briefly worked in Bombay's film studios, and that the dancer also recorded as a playback and on-screen singer.
