उमा देवी (टुन-टुन)

Uma Devi (c. 1923–2003), known to later generations as the comedian Tun Tun, was in her youth one of the most naturally gifted singers in Hindi cinema. Born in Uttar Pradesh, she came to Bombay in the mid-1940s and was immediately recognised by Naushad, who cast her in Dard (1947) with a classically ambitious song. 'Afsana Likh Rahi Hoon' was an overnight radio sensation and established Uma Devi as a voice to watch. She sang in a handful of subsequent films but transitioned to comic acting roles in the late 1940s and early 1950s — a decision that brought her fame and affection from Indian audiences for decades, but effectively ended one of Hindi film music's most promising singing careers. She appeared in hundreds of films as Tun Tun, the lovably round comic foil, and was adored by audiences who often did not know she had once reduced radio listeners to silence with her singing.

Born in Uttar Pradesh, Uma Devi received early musical training and came to Bombay with the ambition of becoming a playback singer. The exact circumstances of her Naushad association are not fully documented, but she was singing for films from 1945 onwards.

Uma Devi's singing career peaked with 'Afsana Likh Rahi Hoon' in Dard (1947), composed by Naushad. She subsequently transitioned to comic acting, becoming beloved as Tun Tun — appearing with Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Dharmendra and virtually every major male star across four decades. Her screen persona was a cheerful, rotund figure perpetually in comic distress, beloved by children and adults alike.

Uma Devi is remembered in two separate registers of Indian cultural memory: as Tun Tun, the comedian who made four generations laugh; and as the singer who recorded 'Afsana Likh Rahi Hoon' and then, inexplicably to purists, stopped. Both memories are affectionate. The tragedy, if there is one, is only visible in retrospect — in what a full singing career might have produced.

Uma Devi's singing voice was characterised by remarkable purity of tone and ease of ornament — she deployed classical meends and gamaks without apparent effort. Naushad noted her natural musicality; the voice had a slightly throaty, warm quality distinct from the brighter registers of contemporary singers.

One immortal song ('Afsana Likh Rahi Hoon') and then a second immortality as Tun Tun — Hindi cinema's first great comedienne.
