The Monographजीवनी Biography

Pandit Sudarshan (born Badrinath, 1896 - 16 December 1967) was an Indian Hindi-Urdu writer and film lyricist-screenwriter, born in Sialkot, Punjab (present-day Pakistan). A contemporary of Munshi Premchand, he began his career as a journalist in Lahore, writing under the pen name "Sudarshan," and edited the Jat Gazette under Chaudhary Chhotu Ram. His debut short story, "Haar Ki Jeet," published in Saraswati magazine in 1920, brought him wide literary recognition, and he went on to write novels, short-story collections, and plays, including Tirtha-Yatra and Patthron Ka Saudagar.
Sudarshan entered Hindi cinema when Calcutta's Bharat Laxmi Pictures invited him to write the screenplay and lyrics for Ramayan (1934). He followed this with New Theatres' Dhoop Chhaon (1935), for which he wrote both the screenplay and all ten songs, including the popular "Teri Gathri Mein Laga Chor," and Dharti Mata (1938), directed by Nitin Bose. His best-known film work came with Sohrab Modi's historical epic Sikandar (1941), for which he wrote the dialogues and songs; the film's script was later published as a book by Modi. He also contributed to Padosi (1941, V. Shantaram), Phir Milenge (1942), and Prithvi Vallabh (1943), and briefly directed the film Kunwari Ya Vidhwa (1935). In 1950, he became the first vice-president of the Film Writers' Association.
Compared to other lyricists of his era, few of Sudarshan's film credits survive on record, and he gradually withdrew from filmmaking through the 1960s, returning his focus to literature. He died in Mumbai on 16 December 1967.
