The Monographजीवनी Biography

Mumtaz Ali was one of Hindi cinema's first male dancing stars — a dancer, actor and singer who became a fixture of the Bombay Talkies studio in its earliest years. After a hard childhood, he ran a small street-theatre troupe in Bombay, where the journalist B. G. Horniman took him under his wing and, in 1933, recommended him to Himanshu Rai, who was then setting up Bombay Talkies. Hired as a supporting actor, singer and dancer, Mumtaz Ali appeared in the studio's landmark productions of the 1930s, including Jawani Ki Hawa (1935), Achhut Kanya (1936), Janmabhoomi (1936), Jeevan Prabhat (1937) and Izzat (1937), performing his own song-and-dance numbers on screen — among them the sprightly 'Nayi Naveli Chali Akeli' (1937). His comic dance number 'Main To Dilli Se Dulhan Laya Re' from the Bombay Talkies hit Jhoola became so popular that it was a staple at wedding celebrations for years. He sided with Devika Rani during the studio's 1943 split and left in 1945, later working with Filmistan in films such as Shehnai (1947) while also touring India with his own dance revue, 'Mumtaz Ali Nites'. His later career was cut short by alcoholism, and the family fell on hard times — pushing his son, the future comedy legend Mehmood, into films as a child artist; his daughter Minoo Mumtaz also became a noted dancer-actress.
