Mikey McCleary is a composer, producer and arranger who occupies a rare niche in Hindi film music: a New Zealander, born in Chennai in 1969, whose sound helped shape Indian pop from the mid-1990s onward. He first made his mark as the producer-arranger behind Lucky Ali's landmark indipop albums, beginning with Sunoh (1996), whose fresh, acoustic-electronic textures stood apart from the film music of the era. Settling into Mumbai's studio world, he became one of advertising's most in-demand jingle composers while building a parallel identity as 'The Bartender', releasing a series of albums that reimagined classic Bollywood songs as lounge and retro-swing arrangements — a style that soon crossed back into films, most famously with his haunting rework of 'Khoya Khoya Chand' in Shaitan (2011). His film scores include Margarita with a Straw (2014), which won him the Best Composer prize at the 2015 Asian Film Awards. In 2024 he launched the Indian pop girl group W.i.S.H., and his recent film work includes composing, writing and singing for Pedro (2025).
