The Monographजीवनी Biography

Jyoti, born Sitara Begum in 1921 in Fatehabad, Agra, was a singer and actress of early Hindi cinema known as "the sweet crooner of the Indian screen." She grew up in a musical household trained in the classical music of the Agra Gharana. Her elder sister Wahidan -- a popular actress-singer at Ranjit Studio and mother of the later star Nimmi -- eased her entry into films and gave her the screen name "Jyoti."
She debuted in 1939 with Mehboob Khan's Ek Hi Rasta, and her songs from that film brought her early popularity. She went on to appear in Comrades (1939), opposite singer-actor Surendra, and in films including Sadhana (1939), Aurat (1940), Sanskar (1940), Pooja (1940), Radhika (1941), and Darshan (1941), the last opposite Prem Adib. Working extensively with composer Anil Biswas, she recorded songs such as "Naach Naach Man Mor" and "Chand Ne Has Kar Kiya Ujala," as well as several duets with Surendra. Over her career she sang 38 songs across 12 films.
Jyoti paused her career around 1942-1945 out of wartime anxieties before resuming at the encouragement of directors Mehboob Khan and A. R. Kardar; her final film was Sati Vaishalini (1959). She married her frequent co-singer G. M. Durrani.
