Maya Nagari (literally 'City of Illusion') is a 1944 Hindi fantasy-action picture directed by Dhirubhai Desai, with Rajkumari and Yashwant Dave in the lead. Belonging to the studio-era strand of mythological-fantasy and stunt cinema that flourished through the wartime 1940s, it wrapped its spectacle and adventure in a generous song programme scored by Veer Singh.

The Maya Nagari soundtrack was composed by Veer Singh; reference sources credit the lyrics to Balam and Qabil at the film level, though surviving discographies do not attribute individual songs to either lyricist. The recorded numbers spread across a devotional-and-romantic spectrum — from the bhajan-toned 'Aye Nath Daya Karke' and 'Bhajo Re Seetaram' to the playful 'Pee Le Anguri Ke Pyale' — and were divided among Rajkumari, Mumtaz Begum, G. M. Durrani and James Singh.

Rajkumari

The Monographमहत्व Significance

Maya Nagari is notable within 1940s Hindi cinema for its score by music director Veer Singh, a figure of the fantasy-and-stunt circuit whose surviving record is chiefly musical. Its soundtrack drew on a varied ensemble of voices — Rajkumari, Mumtaz Begum, G. M. Durrani and James Singh — and the song list endures in gramophone discographies even where the film print and full plot have not survived.
