The story of Kangan, Bombay Talkies' 1939 hit — directed by Franz Osten, scored by Saraswati Devi, and starring the Ashok Kumar–Leela Chitnis pairing who sang their own songs in the era before full playback.

In 1939 Bombay Talkies made Kangan from its Malad studio — the same dream factory where Himanshu Rai and Devika Rani had founded modern Indian filmmaking. It was directed by the German director Franz Osten, who had been making the studio's films since 1935. Kangan brought the pairing of Ashok Kumar and Leela Chitnis to the screen, and it became one of the studio's successful productions.

The music was by Saraswati Devi — Hindi cinema's first woman music director, born Khorshed Homji, classically trained under Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande. This was the era before full playback singing: Ashok Kumar and Leela Chitnis, who were not professional singers, sang their own songs. Saraswati Devi's gift lay precisely in coaxing memorable songs out of such non-singers.

The year of Kangan was a turning point for Bombay Talkies. When war broke out in Europe in 1939, the British authorities arrested the German national Franz Osten and later sent him to Germany; he never made another film. An era closed — yet the Ashok Kumar–Leela Chitnis pairing and Saraswati Devi's music remained part of the studio's identity.
