Bowli (the parent raag from which Bowli Vasantham derives) is a janya of Maayaamalavagowla (15th melakarta) and uses a pentatonic scale in ascent — Sa, Komal Re, Shuddha Ga, Pa, Komal Dha — that strongly outlines the Bhairav thaat character. The descent brings in all notes. The characteristic phrase emphasises the tension between Komal Re and Shuddha Ga (a minor-second interval rising to a major third), which is the defining colour shared with Hindustani Bhairav.

Bowli Vasantham is a Carnatic janya raag combining two distinct musical concepts: 'Bowli' (also Bhoopali-Bhowli or Bhowli) and 'Vasantham' (spring). Bowli itself is derived from the 15th melakarta Maayaamalavagowla, one of the most important and ancient of the 72 melakartas codified by Venkatamakhin in the Chaturdandiprakashika (c. 1620 CE) — belonging to the third chakra, Agni. Maayaamalavagowla uses the notes Sa, R1 (Shuddha Ri / Komal Re), G3 (Antara Ga / Shuddha Ga), M1, Pa, D1 (Shuddha Da / Komal Dha), N3 (Kakali Ni / Shuddha Ni), and its scale is virtually identical to the Hindustani Bhairav thaat, making it perhaps the most direct cross-system equivalent pair in all of Indian music theory.
The addition of 'Vasantham' (spring) to the Bowli name gives this compound raag a seasonal and devotional character. Vasantham-type raags in Carnatic music are associated with the spring season, the festival of colours (Holi), and compositions honouring Lord Krishna or Vishnu. Bowli Vasantham is primarily a devotional raga performed in concert and temple settings; it is not widely documented in contemporary concert practice and is encountered mainly in specialised repertoire.
