Bauli (also written Bowli or Bawali) is a Carnatic janya raag derived from the 15th melakarta Mayamalavagowla (S r G M P d N), which corresponds to Hindustani Bhairav thaat. Mayamalavagowla itself is one of the most ancient and fundamental melakartas, and Bauli is among its well-known janyas. The raag omits Rishabha in the ascent and uses komal Re only in descent, giving it a vivid, sharp character. It is associated with morning performance and a mood of alertness and brightness.
