An artist named Ashok loses his childhood beloved Vimala to a wealthier rival Jagdish. Heartbroken, Ashok channels his grief into painting her portraits, which win public acclaim but cannot fill the void within; he turns to drink and his fortunes collapse. When the now-married Vimala attempts to help him through her husband's charity, Ashok misreads her kindness as condescension, and the misunderstanding spirals toward tragedy. Described by contemporaries as the 'poor man's Devdas', the film was inspired by P.C. Barua's 1935 landmark while carving its own melodic identity.

Ashok Ghosh and Anil Biswas (then a young arranger) created a score that mixed light orchestration with Surendra's distinctive baritone; the 10 songs became the commercial highlight of the film and launched Surendra's career as a singing star.

Established Surendra as Bombay's answer to New Theatres' K.L. Saigal — a singing hero who could carry a film on the strength of his voice. Mehboob Khan's direction showed early mastery of melodrama and romantic tension that would define his later masterworks. The song 'Tumhi Ne Mujhko Prem Sikhaya' (Surendra-Bibbo duet) became a popular hit.
