A social drama about a joint family navigating shifting fortunes — 'dhoop' (sun) and 'chhaon' (shade) — the film is structurally significant as the first Indian talkie to use pre-recorded playback singing. Director Nitin Bose recorded songs separately and played them back during filming, allowing actors to lip-sync rather than sing live. This technical breakthrough transformed the art of Indian film-song production.

The playback singers in Dhoop Chhaon included K.C. Dey (for his own on-screen role), and female voices identified as Parul Ghosh, Suprova Sarkar, and Harimati — though the precise song-by-singer assignments across the soundtrack require archival verification. 'Teri Gathri Mein Laga Chor' sung by K.C. Dey and 'Main Khush Hona Chahun' are among the most cited songs.

Nitin Bose devised the playback technique after observing the difficulties actors — especially non-singers — faced performing live during early talkies. The technical solution required synchronising the playback machine with the camera; Bose's New Theatres engineers refined this synchronisation over the course of the production.

The first Indian film to use playback singing — a watershed moment in the history of Hindi cinema. Before Dhoop Chhaon, all film songs were performed live on set. After it, the separation of singer and actor became structurally possible, eventually creating the Lata Mangeshkar era and the entire playback industry.

Every subsequent Indian film song — from Mukesh to Asha Bhosle to Arijit Singh — is Dhoop Chhaon's descendant. The playback revolution it started made possible the phenomenon of invisible singers who became stars in their own right.
