Kamini Kaushal is one of the enduring figures of Hindi cinema — a Lahore-born actress whose naturalistic style was a departure from the theatrical conventions of early Indian talkies. She made her name with Shaheed (1948), the film that launched Dilip Kumar as a full star, in which she played his love interest Kasturi opposite his patriot-martyr Ram. Her chemistry with Dilip Kumar, then at the cusp of his stardom, gave the film its emotional centre. She subsequently appeared in major productions including Ziddi (1948) with Dev Anand and Kishore Kumar's debut, and Bimal Roy's Biraj Bahu (1954). Her acting approach — observational, inward, prioritising emotional truth over histrionic display — placed her ahead of her time. She continued appearing in films and television for six decades, a testament to her versatility and longevity.

Born Uma Sehgal in Lahore; educated and came to Bombay in the post-partition years. Her early career benefitted from the social realist wave in Indian cinema.
