Angayarkanni is a janya of the 22nd melakarta Kharaharapriya and follows an Audava-Audava (pentatonic) movement: ascent and descent each use five notes, omitting Rishabha and Dhaivata. The characteristic phrase Ga-Ma-Pa-Ni-Sa in ascent and Sa-Ni-Pa-Ma-Ga-Sa in descent gives this raga its flowing, devotional identity. The emphasis on Gandhara (komal) and Nishada (komal) establishes a minor-scale quality akin to Kafi in Hindustani music, lending the raga its tender, goddess-worship bhava.

वादी–संवादी टिप्पणी · Vadi–Samvadi note

ऐतिहासिक महत्व Historical Significance

Angayarkanni is a well-documented Carnatic janya (derivative) raga of the 22nd melakarta Kharaharapriya, whose note-set — Sa Ri2 Ga2 Ma1 Pa Da2 Ni2 — corresponds to the Kafi thaat in Hindustani music. The raga follows an Audava-Audava structure (five notes ascending, five descending), omitting Rishabha and Dhaivata from both directions. Its name is a Tamil devotional epithet: 'Angayarkanni' (Tamil: அங்கயர்கண்ணி) means 'lotus-eyed Angayar,' one of the 108 names of Goddess Meenakshi enshrined at the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple. 'Angayar' literally means 'one with beautiful limbs,' and 'kanni' carries the sense of 'lotus-eyed maiden.' The raga is most celebrated for the Tana Varnam 'Angayarkanni' attributed to the Tanjore Quartet (Ponniah, Chinnaiah, Sivanandam, and Vadivelu, fl. 1820s–1860s), which is a standard piece in bharatanatyam concerts. A Navarasa Varnam in this raga exists exploring all nine rasas. The raga's tender Kharaharapriya parent gives it a naturally lyrical, devotional quality well-suited to goddess worship in the Shaiva and Shakta traditions of Tamil Nadu.

More to Know

In Film Music

Angayarkanni is a devotional Carnatic raga associated with Goddess Meenakshi of Madurai that has not been documented by name in Hindi film music. However, the Tanjore Quartet's Tana Varnam in Angayarkanni is regularly performed as the opening piece in bharatanatyam dance recitals, giving it wide exposure across South Indian cultural performances. Tamil devotional films and albums set around the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple occasionally use melodic idioms drawn from Kharaharapriya-family ragas, but Angayarkanni as a specifically named raga has not been identified in mainstream Tamil or Hindi film compositions. Its tender, pentatonic character in the Kafi/Kharaharapriya sphere would suit devotional, feminine, and contemplative sequences.
