The rāga is classified as a janya of Kharaharapriya, the 22nd melakarta in Venkatamakhin's 72-melakarta system (codified c. 1660 CE, Chakra 4). This identification is confirmed in Walter Kaufmann's authoritative Ragas of South India, which lists Ananda Varidhi among the 132 janya ragas of Kharaharapriya. Kharaharapriya uses Chatusruti Rishabha (shuddha Re), Sadharana Gandhara (komal Ga), Shuddha Madhyama, Shuddha Pa, Chatusruti Dhaivata (shuddha Dha), and Kaisika Nishada (komal Ni) — a scale that corresponds to Kafi thaat in the Hindustani system. Kharaharapriya is one of the most fertile melakartas in Carnatic music, parent to ragas such as Kharaharapriya itself (used as a full scale), Bhairavi, and many others.
