The title is a relative clause left hanging — the one whom you did not hear — and its grammar does the work: it names an absence of listening rather than an absence of love. Set beside the film's Saigal numbers, which complain upward to God, this one complains sideways, to a person.

Hindi lets a speaker define herself entirely by what the other person failed to do — 'the one whom you did not hear' — which places the whole weight of the line on the listener's deafness while the speaker stays grammatically in the third person, describing herself from outside. It is a more oblique register than the film's other laments, and it is the only one in the score that is directed at a human being rather than at God or at fate.
