The Monographपरिचय Overview

A slow male solo from the Laila Majnu score, composed by Pandit Gobind Ram to Tanveer Naqvi's words. The singer is disputed. Surjit Singh's index of his own 78-rpm collection, which takes its credits from the disc labels, records the side as Durrani — that is, G. M. Durrani, one of the leading male playback voices of the 1940s and the singer whose style the young Mohammed Rafi openly modelled himself on. Several lyrics databases instead credit Khan Mastana, and hindigeetmala carries no song-level singer at all, falling back to the film's full roster. This entry follows the disc label and records the alternative.
The Music

Gobind Ram composes here in the slow ghazal manner that a parting song of this period calls for: a melody with room between the phrases, so that the singer can let a line hang before the accompaniment picks it up again. The accompaniment on a Bombay recording of 1945 would have been small by later standards — harmonium, tabla or dholak, a bowed string, perhaps a flute — and the arrangement's job was to stay out of the vocal's way. If the disc label is right that the voice is G. M. Durrani, the recording preserves the particular sound that dominated male playback just before Rafi, Mukesh and Talat Mahmood divided that territory between them at the end of the decade.
The Poetry

The broken heart is so worn an image that poets normally have to do something to it before it will work again, and the move in this title is the follow-through: not the breaking, but the stooping to gather the pieces afterwards. That gesture converts a passive injury into a deliberate act, and it belongs to the same family of Urdu conceits in which the lover carefully preserves the evidence of his own ruin — keeping the fragments, carrying them away, offering them as proof. Tanveer Naqvi wrote for the ear rather than for the page, and this is the kind of simple, physical image a film lyric can land in one hearing without asking the audience to unpick a metaphor.
The Story

The film is the Hind Pictures Laila Majnu of 1945, produced, directed by and starring Nazir, with Swarnlata as Laila. A parting song for a male voice sits naturally in a story whose second half is entirely about separation — Qais refused, Laila married elsewhere, the lover driven into the desert. Which of the film's men sang it is exactly the question the sources cannot settle: the record label points to G. M. Durrani, who is not otherwise listed among this film's singers, while the lyrics databases point to Khan Mastana, who certainly sang at least two other numbers here. Until a disc or a censor list surfaces, the honest position is that one attribution rests on a label and the other on later compilation.
The Legacy

The song has no independent afterlife — it was not covered, not revived, and does not appear in the standard 1945 retrospectives. Its value now is as one more data point in the reconstruction of a soundtrack whose paperwork is gone, and as an instance of the wider problem that historians of this period keep running into: for a very large share of mid-1940s Hindi film songs the singer is simply not recorded anywhere reliable. One survey of 1945 estimates that the singer is unknown for close to half the year's film songs, which is the context in which a disagreement like this one should be read.

The 78-rpm disc index compiled by a private record collector credits this side to Durrani — G. M. Durrani — while online lyrics databases credit Khan Mastana. Neither can currently be confirmed against the other.

G. M. Durrani was one of the best-known male playback voices of the 1940s and the singer the young Mohammed Rafi is documented as having idolised and imitated — which makes his presence on a film that also carries Rafi's first screen appearance a neat coincidence, if the label is right.
