झूम झूम कर आई जवानी

Listed first among the eleven Chhamia songs in the BollySwar compendium, 'Jhoom Jhoom Kar Aayi Jawani' is a jawani song — one of the most standardised item types in 1940s Hindi cinema, in which youth itself is treated as a visitor who has just walked in. Gyan Dutt composed it to lyrics by Pandit Indra and Kabil Amritsari. No singer is attributed to it in any catalogue consulted, and none is recorded here.

No recording circulates and the catalogues describe nothing beyond authorship, so the setting cannot be characterised. The song type it belongs to, however, was scored a particular way across the industry in these years — brisk, dholak-led, built for a dance picturisation — and Chhamia had Azurie, one of the era's best-known dancers, in its cast, which is the kind of casting that usually implies at least one such number in a film.

The jawani-arrival lyric is a convention with a fixed grammar: youth does not belong to the speaker, it comes to her, and the verb of arrival is almost always one of motion with a sway in it — jhoom, lehra, machal. That grammatical choice is the whole point. By making youth the subject and the young woman the place it arrives at, the convention lets a song celebrate desire while keeping the singer technically passive, which is how such songs got past both the censor and the domestic audience of 1945. In a Pygmalion story the figure is doubly apt, since the film's premise is a young woman being taken in hand and remade by others; but the song's placement in the film is not documented, and this is offered as reading rather than record.

Chhamia (1945) was produced and directed by Protima Dasgupta for her own company, P.D.G. Pictures, from an adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, with Begum Para in the lead and a supporting company that included the comedian David, the dancer Azurie and Dixit. Gyan Dutt supplied eleven songs to lyrics by Pandit Indra and Kabil Amritsari. The picture was a commercial success and remained the high point of Dasgupta's short career behind the camera; it is not in circulation today, so its songs are known chiefly through catalogue listings and surviving 78-rpm discs. The cast also included Azurie, among the most prominent dancers in Hindi films of the 1930s and 40s.

The recording is not in commercial circulation and does not appear in the standard 1940s reissue compilations; it survives as a title in the Chhamia song list rather than as living repertoire. Its interest today is as part of the documented output of a hit film directed by a woman in 1945 — a body of work that the reissue market has never gone back for.
