Overview

'Jhanan Mori Baje Payaliya' heads the documented ten-song list of Chand Tara (1945), a social picture directed by Mahesh Chandra for which no print or plot summary survives. It is an Amirbai Karnataki solo, one of five she sings alone in the film, with music by Gyan Dutt and words by Swami Ramanand Saraswati. The title turns on the sound of ghungroos — the ringing of a woman's anklets — which in Hindi film songwriting almost always signals a dance sequence or a heroine crossing a courtyard in the dark. Nothing further about its picturisation is recorded; what the entry preserves is a clean, single-source attribution for a song that the film's own disappearance has otherwise erased.

The Music

Gyan Dutt had scored eleven films for Ranjit Movietone between 1938 and 1939 and remained associated with the studio until 1940, arriving at Chand Tara by way of his biggest success, Bhakt Surdas (1942). A payaliya song sits at the rhythmic end of that range: the anklet itself supplies a metre, and the composer's job is to write a tune that a dancer's feet can mark. Amirbai Karnataki, born at Bilgi in Bijapur district, Karnataka, was by the mid-1940s in enough demand to be paid around a thousand rupees a recording when other singers were getting five hundred. No recording of this song survives, so nothing can be said about how she sang it.

The Poetry

The anklet is one of the oldest devices in North Indian love poetry and it works because it removes a woman's choice about being noticed. In the Braj and thumri traditions the nayika who goes to meet her beloved is betrayed by her own payal; the sound announces her to the household she is trying to slip past, and the poem's tension lives in that involuntary noise. 'Jhanan' is the onomatopoeia for it, and a title that opens with the sound rather than with a statement is placing the listener inside the moment before anything has been said. Swami Ramanand Saraswati was writing squarely inside this convention, which by 1945 had been absorbed from classical thumri into the film song without losing its charge.

The Story

Chand Tara was directed by Mahesh Chandra and released in 1945 with Swarnalata top-billed, followed by Jagdish Sethi, Noor Mohammed Charlie, Pesi Patel, Kesari, Ghory and Indira. Standard listings classify it as a social — the 1940s trade label for contemporary drama, romance and light comedy as distinct from mythologicals and costume films. Gyan Dutt scored it and Swami Ramanand Saraswati wrote all ten songs. It was one of at least two 1945 assignments for Dutt, the other being Chhamia, and it belongs to the last phase of Noor Mohammed Charlie's Bombay career before he moved to Pakistan after Partition.

The Legacy

The song did not enter the popular gramophone repertoire and is not part of any standard 1940s retrospective; it survives as a catalogue entry rather than as a recording in circulation. Its documentary value is that it fixes a date, a composer, a lyricist and a voice to a title, and so contributes one line to the reconstruction of Amirbai Karnataki's mid-1940s workload — a period in which she was singing complete or near-complete albums for several films a year, immediately before the arrival of Lata Mangeshkar changed which voices Bombay hired.

Margin Notes

Amirbai Karnataki sings on eight of Chand Tara's ten songs — five solos and three duets — which was close to the normal load for a leading female playback voice in Bombay in 1945.

Amirbai Karnataki was born at Bilgi in Bijapur district, Karnataka, and moved to Bombay in 1931; she is best remembered for 'Door Hato Ae Duniya Walo' in Kismet (1943), the wartime song that passed British censorship and became a coded nationalist anthem.
