झूम रहा आज मेरा अंग अंग

A Rajkumari solo from Ratnavali (1945), written by Rammurti Chaturvedi and composed by Pt. Gobind Ram. The title is a declaration of physical joy — the body swaying of its own accord — and in a score weighted towards separation and prayer it is the one unambiguously celebratory entry. Only the audio survives; the picturisation has never been established, and it is not known which actress the song was filmed on.

The recording circulates as audio only and its orchestration is undocumented, so no description of the arrangement is offered here. Rajkumari takes three of this film's eight songs — more than any other voice on the score — and was among the busiest playback singers of the mid-1940s, a period in which she recorded for most of the Bombay composers working at volume. Pt. Gobind Ram is credited with about thirty Hindi films and is remembered chiefly for the singers he advanced: he recorded eighty-six songs with Shamshad Begum across nineteen films, did as much as anyone to establish Zohrabai Ambalewali, brought Zeenat Begum into films and gave early encouragement to Mohammed Rafi. His idiom of these years mixes light music, ghazal and thumri with folk material and a distinct Punjabi tinge.

Ang ang jhoom raha hai — the limbs themselves are swaying — puts the feeling in the body rather than in the heart, which is the ordinary seat of emotion in the film lyric of the period. That displacement is the whole device of the line: joy so complete that it bypasses declaration and simply shows in movement. It is the diction of the ritu and utsav songs of north Indian folk rather than of the Urdu film ghazal, and it sits in the same register Rammurti Chaturvedi uses for the film's spring chorus.

Ratnavali was Amar Pictures' costume adaptation of the Sanskrit play attributed to emperor Harsha, directed by Surendra Desai with Surendra and Ratnamala in the leads. Rammurti Chaturvedi supplied four of its eight lyrics — his collaborations with Gobind Ram also include Chor, Naseeb and Parinde — and this is the one written for straightforward exuberance rather than longing.

The song surfaced online in May 2023 as the sixth of Ratnavali's eight numbers to be documented, its lyrics transcribed by a reader from the audio because no print of the film exists to check the picturisation against. That is the ordinary fate of a 1945 song from a studio without an archive: the melody survives on shellac, and everything about how it looked on screen is gone.
