Overview

'Jai Jai Se Goonj Utha Bharat' is one of two Amirbai Karnataki numbers in Vikramaditya (1945), written by Ramesh Gupta and composed by Shankarrao Vyas. The title states its own subject: the land ringing with cries of victory. Placed in a film about an ancient Indian king repelling foreign invaders, released two years before independence, it belongs to the large body of 1940s film songs that carried nationalist feeling inside historical or mythological costume.

The Music

A film song of acclamation is written to be heard across a crowd: a march-like or fast dadra-style pulse, phrases that end on the tonic so a chorus can answer, and a melodic range kept narrow enough to be shouted rather than sung. Amirbai Karnataki's voice — strong, slightly grainy, carrying easily in the upper middle register — was suited to exactly this. What Vyas actually scored under her is not documented; nothing of the recording has been traced.

The Poetry

'Jai' is the shortest political word in Hindi. It is a cry of victory and an acclamation of allegiance at once, and in the 1940s it was doing double duty: 'Jai Hind' had already entered circulation as a nationalist greeting, and every 'jai' shouted at an ancient king on screen carried an unmistakable second meaning for an audience under colonial rule. The Bombay censor board of the period suppressed direct nationalist material but had no way to object to a Gupta-era court cheering its own emperor, which is why the historical and the mythological became the safest genres in which to be patriotic. Whether this lyric goes further than its title cannot be established — the text has not survived in any accessible source and none is reproduced here.

The Story

Amirbai Karnataki, born in Bijapur and one of the busiest playback voices of the war years, sings both of the film's acclamation numbers — this one and the title cry 'Jai Ho Vikramaditya Ki Jai Ho'. She also takes the female line in the group 'Om Jai Jai Shankar'. Vikramaditya's plot ends with the king defeating the Shakas, killing Shakraj and restoring the Kashmiri princess's father to his throne, which is the moment a song of this title would most naturally serve. The film was directed by Vijay Bhatt for Prakash Pictures at the request of the Vikram Bimillennium Committee.

The Legacy

No recording has been traced and the song is not part of the surviving Amirbai Karnataki repertoire in circulation, which rests mainly on her Bombay Talkies and Ranjit work. Its interest is as a dated specimen of a strategy: in 1945 the fastest route to a patriotic song that would clear the censor was to set it two thousand years in the past. Two years later that circumlocution was no longer necessary, and the whole sub-genre changed shape.

Margin Notes

Vikramaditya was made at the request of the Vikram Bimillennium Committee, which was marking two thousand years of the Vikram Samvat calendar — one of the very few Hindi films of the 1940s commissioned by a public body rather than initiated by a studio.

Sources disagree about the size of this soundtrack: Hindi Geetmala lists ten titles, while the Wikipedia song table lists nine, omitting 'Jai Ho Vikramaditya Ki Jai Ho' and printing 'Dekh Gagan Mein' as 'Hai Gagan Mein'.

Vikramaditya was Prakash Pictures' follow-up to Ram Rajya (1943) — the third highest-grossing Indian release of its year, the only film Mahatma Gandhi is said to have watched, and the first Indian picture to premiere in the United States — with the same director, Vijay Bhatt, and the same composer, Shankarrao Vyas.
