One of the eleven songs of Devdasi (1945), with music by K.C. Dey and words by Narottam Vyas. 'Jai Radhe' is not only an invocation but the everyday greeting of the Braj country around Mathura and Vrindavan, where people salute one another with Radha's name rather than their own; a song built on it is therefore reaching for something communal rather than liturgical. The catalogues record no singer for this title, and the credit is left empty here.

Only the composer and lyricist are documented. In the context of the rest of the Devdasi score — harmonium, tabla, a thin string line, voices kept forward — a Radha-naam song would sit in the album's mid-tempo, cyclic register rather than among its slow laments; the repeated salutation is a rhythmic unit before it is a semantic one, and Dey's kirtan training would have set it accordingly.

Radha-naam devotion inverts the usual hierarchy of Vaishnava worship: the god is approached through his beloved rather than directly, on the argument that Radha's love is the perfected form of what the devotee is attempting, so praising her is both a shortcut and a lesson. Doubling the name — 'Radhe, Shri Radhe' — is standard practice in Braj kirtan, where the honorific 'Shri' on the second utterance intensifies rather than repeats. Narottam Vyas, working out of exactly this Braj tradition, is on native ground here in a way he is not in the Sanskrit litanies elsewhere in the same score.

Devdasi's music was written entirely by one composer and one lyricist, which is why its eleven titles read as a single devotional programme rather than as an assortment. Radha-Krishna material like this sits alongside the film's Vishnu litanies and its prayers of surrender, covering the range of Vaishnava worship fairly systematically. The film's narrative is not documented in accessible catalogues.

'Jai Radhe' songs have never left Hindi film — the greeting is too portable, and every generation of composers has set it again. This 1945 instance is one of the earliest film versions to survive in the catalogues, though it survives as a title and a credit line only, with no performance record and no available print of the film it came from.
