जय जय जय गोविंद जय मुकुंद गिरधारी

One of the eleven songs of Devdasi (1945), composed by K.C. Dey to a lyric by Narottam Vyas. The title is a jaikara — a shouted victory-salutation — strung from three of Krishna's epithets: Govind (cowherd, finder of cows), Mukund (giver of liberation) and Girdhari (holder of the mountain, who lifted Govardhan on his finger). The gramophone-era catalogues that preserve the film's song list do not record a singer for this title, and this entry leaves the credit empty rather than guessing.

Nothing about the recording itself is documented beyond composer and lyricist. What can be said is structural: a jaikara text of this kind is written to be answered, and in the kirtan practice K.C. Dey worked from it would normally be set as a short, repeating, rhythmically firm cycle that a group can take up — the opposite of the through-composed film song. The rest of the Devdasi score is scored at harmonium-and-tabla scale, and there is no reason to think this one departed from it.

Each of the three names in the title carries a different aspect of the same god, and the order is not accidental: Govind is the pastoral Krishna of Braj, Mukund is the theological Krishna who releases the soul, and Girdhari is the Krishna of the Govardhan episode, who sheltered a village from Indra's storm under a lifted hill. A jaikara that runs through all three is a compressed argument — the same figure is the familiar cowherd, the granter of moksha, and the protector who takes on the sky. The repeated 'jai' does the work of rhythm and of assent at once, which is why lyrics like this belong to congregations rather than to soloists.

Devdasi was made in Bombay by New Maharashtra Productions, with Prithviraj Kapoor and Monica Desai in the lead and K.C. Dey composing and acting. Its song list is unusual for the period in being almost wholly devotional, and titles like this one are the reason: the film seems to have used naam-kirtan as its recurring musical mode. No plot summary of the picture survives in accessible sources, so nothing further is claimed here about where this song fell.

This title is one of the four in the Devdasi album that survive as a name, a composer and a lyricist and nothing else — an ordinary condition for 1945 film songs, most of whose performance credits were never systematically recorded and whose films are gone. It is kept in this archive precisely because the record is thin: an incomplete entry that is accurate is more useful than a complete one that is invented.
