The Monographपरिचय Overview

The companion piece to 'Hum Panchhi Hain Aazad' — the second of the two duets that Hamida Banu and Khan Mastana sing in Nasib (1945), and like it, classified in the Hindi Film Geet Kosh-based account of Gobind Ram's career as a narrative duet rather than a romantic one, meaning the two voices are telling something rather than courting each other. 'Do din ki zindagani' — a life of two days — is one of the most worked phrases in Hindi film verse, the shorthand for mortality and for the argument that follows from it. In a film called Nasib, a song that says life is short and therefore should be spent madly is not decoration; it is the counter-position to the fatalism the title states.
The Music

Gobind Ram's strength, in the assessment of the survey of his work, lay in rhythm, beat and orchestration, and a narrative duet is a form that lives on those: it needs forward motion, because two singers passing a story between them must not stall. The likely shape is a medium walking tempo on dholak and tabla with the melody handed back and forth in matched phrases, harmonium filling and a string or reed line marking the turns. The voices are deliberately unmatched — Khan Mastana's rough, projecting, folk-platform tone against Hamida Banu's light and youthful one — and that mismatch is the point in a song about the short life, since the two of them are not one voice agreeing but two people arriving separately at the same conclusion.
The Poetry

Rammurti Chaturvedi is working with a stock of ideas that Hindi and Urdu film verse shared with the whole Indo-Persian lyric tradition: life as a two-day loan, the world as a caravanserai, madness as the only honest response to brevity. The word 'diwani' does the work — it is madness, but the feminine form, and in the ghazal tradition it is what love does to a person rather than a clinical condition. Placing it against 'do din ki zindagani' turns a truism into a proposition: the shortness is not a reason to be careful, it is the reason not to be. That is the same argument the album's other Hamida Banu-Khan Mastana duet makes through the free-bird image, and the two records together give the film its one consistent philosophical position — which is, notably, the opposite of what its title asserts.
The Story

Nasib was a Silver Films production directed by B. D. Vedi and released in 1945. Gobind Ram scored six Hindi films that year and cast this pairing twice on the same album, which was unusual: Khan Mastana was normally used once per film, for the number sung from outside the drama's respectable centre. Hamida Banu, born in 1928, was in her late teens and near the beginning of a career that would run through the later 1940s and into the Pakistan film industry after Partition. The song's title is printed in three different forms across the catalogues — 'Diwani Teri Do Din Ki Zindagani', 'Deewani Teri Do Din Ki Zindgani' and, on HindiGeetMala, the shortened 'Teri Do Din Ki Zindgani' — which is a normal amount of variation for a 1945 record whose label scan has not been published.
The Legacy

The phrase outlived the record. 'Do din ki zindagani' recurs across Hindi film songwriting for the next fifty years, and the philosophical duet — two characters agreeing that life is short — became a fixture of the form. This particular record is not among the three Nasib sides that survived into the Saregama catalogue, so like most of the album it is now a title in an index and a line in the account of Gobind Ram's career. Its value is comparative: it shows that a 1945 programmer with no stars and no budget still shaped its songs into an argument, and that the argument ran against the film's own fatalistic title.

Margin Notes

This and 'Hum Panchhi Hain Aazad' are the only two songs in Nasib to pair Hamida Banu with Khan Mastana; the Geet Kosh-based account of Gobind Ram's films describes both as narrative duets.

HindiGeetMala indexes the song under the shortened title 'Teri Do Din Ki Zindgani', without the opening word — one of several places where the Nasib catalogue entries disagree with each other on spelling.
