देख बीज की माया

The one song in Dhanna Bhagat (1945) whose singer no surviving catalogue names — hindigeetmala lists it with Khemchand Prakash as composer and Pandit Indra as lyricist, and an empty singer field. Its title points straight at the episode the film exists to dramatise: Dhanna, a Jat farmer of Chauru village near Jaipur, gave away his seed grain to wandering mendicants and ploughed his fields with nothing sown, and the harvest came anyway.

The surviving catalogue entry preserves the composer and lyricist but not the voice, so nothing can responsibly be said about the performance. What can be said about the setting is what the score does everywhere else: Khemchand Prakash works in an unornamented bhajan idiom here, with the melodic weight on the first half of each line and the accompaniment kept to harmonium and light percussion — a deliberate contrast to the court-classical writing he had done for Tansen (1943) at the same studio.

The seed is the natural image for a farmer's theology, and it argues a specific case: a grain that has to be buried and lost before it can multiply makes hoarding look like the opposite of prudence. Read that way the word maya in the title is not 'illusion' in the world-denying sense but something closer to wonder — the astonishing productive power of a thing given up. That reading is what allows the saint's biography to be a story about generosity rather than about withdrawal, and it is the difference between Dhanna's legend and the more austere renunciation narratives that Hindi cinema was filming in the same decade.

The Dhanna legend as it comes down through the bhakti tradition ends with the saint's landlord demanding his due, being offered two gourds from the miraculous crop, breaking them open in anger and finding them full of pearls — a story Mirabai herself later cited. Kidar Sharma's 1945 film builds its middle act around this material. The film was made at Ranjit Movietone, advertised in The Bombay Chronicle on 1 December 1945, and reviewed within the week.

No reissue or later performance of this recording is documented, and with the singer unidentified it cannot even be traced through a performer's discography. It is listed here for completeness of the soundtrack record.
