The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Bujh Rahi Hai Aansuon Ki Aag' is a Naseem Banu solo from Begum (1945), one of six songs in the film sung by its leading lady. Words by Gopal Singh Nepali, music by Hari Prasanna Das, who scored the entire nine-song album. The film is not in circulation and the recording does not appear in the reissue catalogues, so the song survives as a documented credit rather than as available listening.
The Music

The arrangement cannot be described, as no pressing is accessible. What the credits establish is the working method behind it: Hari Prasanna Das was a studio composer of the 1930s and 1940s — Bombay Mail (1935), Mohabbat (1943), Kadambari (1944), Meena (1944), Mazdoor (1945), Sati Toral (1947) and, with a young Manna Dey, Veerangana (1947) — the kind of professional who delivered complete scores on schedule for mid-budget productions rather than one who left a signature style behind him.
The Poetry

The image in the title is a controlled contradiction: tears are made of water, and yet here they are the fuel of a fire, and the fire is going out. Grief burns while it is fresh; the song is set at the point after that, where even the burning has begun to fail and what is left is ash rather than pain. Nepali gets the whole emotional position into the first line without naming an addressee, a cause or a complaint — an economy that reads as poetry rather than as film verse.
The Story

Begum was a Taj Mahal Pictures production directed by Sushil Majumdar, with Naseem Banu and Ashok Kumar in the leads and a screenplay credited by MySwar to Saadat Hasan Manto. Because no plot summary of the film survives in the accessible archives, its nine song titles are the only sustained trace of what the film was about — and a cluster of them, this one included, sit in the register of loss.
The Legacy

The song has no independent afterlife: it is listed in the Hindi film-song databases with the rest of the Begum score and is otherwise absent from anthologies, radio programming and reissues. Its value now is archival — one line in the complete 1945 soundtrack of a lost film, and one of the earliest documented lyrics of Gopal Singh Nepali, who would go on to write for around fifty films before his death in 1963.
