'Sare Jahaan Mein Mera Raaj' is a Naseem Banu solo from Begum (1945). Hindigeetmala lists it in truncated form as 'Sare Jahan Me'; MySwar carries the fuller title used here. Lyrics by Gopal Singh Nepali, music by Hari Prasanna Das. Like the rest of the score it exists today only as a catalogue entry — the film is not in circulation and no reissued pressing has been traced.

The recording is inaccessible and nothing about its arrangement can be stated. Structurally the score is unusual for its year in one respect worth noting: six of its nine songs sit on the voice of the film's leading lady rather than on hired playback singers, so the album has an unbroken vocal identity that most 1945 soundtracks — built from a rotating cast of professional voices — do not.

The declaration is imperial in its vocabulary — raaj, rule, held over saare jahaan, the entire world — and in a film called Begum the choice of register is unlikely to be accidental: a begum is a woman of rank, and a song claiming dominion is the title's idea turned into first-person speech. Whether the film meant that claim seriously, ironically or as a young woman's boast cannot be established, because no plot summary of Begum survives. What can be said is that Nepali gives the singer the largest possible frame and lets her stand inside it.

Begum came out of Taj Mahal Pictures, the production company Naseem Banu ran with her husband, and it is one of the handful of titles that banner is recorded as making — Ajeeb Ladki (1942), Ujala (1942), Begum (1945), Mulaqat (1947) and Chandni Raat (1949). A star producing her own films in the 1940s had a degree of control over her material that most of her contemporaries did not, and a song of self-assertion sung by the owner-star of the banner sits interestingly against that fact.

The song has left no trace beyond the databases: no reissue, no anthology, no documented broadcast. The title's survival in two slightly different forms across two catalogues is itself a small illustration of how pre-Independence song lists reach us — copied, abbreviated and re-transliterated from trade records and 78-rpm labels rather than from the films themselves.
