सौ नाच नचाए जवानी

The fourth track of Rahat (1945) and the second of the film's two songs with a documented vocalist, 'Sau Naach Nachaye Jawani' is sung by Vatsala Kumthekar, written by Pandit Phani and composed by S. Dutt. The title personifies jawani — youth — as an agent that puts the speaker through a hundred dances.

No transfer of the recording has been located, so nothing can be said about its scoring or metre. The only documented musical facts are the composer, S. Dutt, and the voice, Vatsala Kumthekar — the same pairing as on 'Chandrama Ke Mukhde Se'.

Nachana — to make someone dance — carries in Hindi the sense of being made to jump to another's tune, so the title's figure is not celebratory so much as rueful: youth is the one holding the strings and the singer is the one dancing. This is a reading of the title only; the lyric itself is not reproduced here.

Kumthekar's two credits carry whatever is now audible of Rahat's identity, and this is the more characterful title of the pair. Nothing is recorded about how it was picturised, or on which of the film's actresses — Sardar Akhtar, Indira or Kumthekar herself.

Like the rest of the album the song has had no documented afterlife in reissue or broadcast. It stands in the record as one of the last traceable Vatsala Kumthekar credits before her name largely disappears from the catalogues.
