The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Bahut Mukhtasar Hai Hamari Kahani' — 'our story is a very brief one' — is a Mohammed Rafi solo from Wadia Movietone's Sharbati Ankhen (1945), written by Tanveer Naqvi and composed by Feroz Nizami. It is the best documented of the film's ten songs, largely because a surviving transfer of the 78-rpm record was posted and discussed on the vintage-song blog Atul's Song A Day in 2013, where the number is read as turning on the brevity of a life and on how quickly youth converts itself into love. Rafi was an unplaced newcomer when he recorded it: by the account preserved on that blog, he had until then sung only two solos in his entire career, and this one film gave him three.
The Music

Feroz Nizami was a Kirana-gharana-trained vocalist before he was a film composer, and his writing here gives the singer room rather than filling it with orchestra. The only transfer in circulation is poor enough that the arrangement cannot honestly be described in detail; what carries through the surface noise is an unhurried mid-tempo line, stated plainly and then handed over to the singer's breath, with none of the vocal mannerisms that would soon become standard in Bombay recording.
The Poetry

'Mukhtasar' is the Urdu word for short, abridged, told in few words, and Tanveer Naqvi builds the whole lyric on it: the speaker's story is not grand and not tragic, it is simply brief. That is a particular and slightly cold consolation — it does not deny the pain, it shrinks it — and it is a recognisable move in the 1940s Urdu film lyric, the ghazal's habit of reaching dignity through understatement rather than through protest. Naqvi, a Lahore poet who would write 'Awaaz De Kahan Hai' for Anmol Ghadi the following year and who after 1947 became one of Pakistani cinema's principal lyricists, is working here in exactly the register he carried across the border with him.
The Story

Sharbati Ankhen was produced by Wadia Movietone in Bombay and directed by Ramchandra Thakur, from a story about a middle-class girl and the son of a rich family whose fortune, unknown to them, rests on sacrifices the girl's father once made for the boy's grandfather. Ishwarlal played the male lead. Almost nothing else about the production survives — no scene-level synopsis, no stills, no reviews findable in accessible archives — so the situation this song sits in, and the actor it was picturised on, are simply not documented. The ten-song list is effectively the whole of what remains of the film.
The Legacy

The song survives as a Rafi-origins document. Its value to collectors is that it predates the point at which his style settled into what the industry later demanded of him; the blog that returned the recording to circulation notes that he was already singing full-throated here, against the grain of what was then expected from a new male voice. Feroz Nizami's own reputation would be made two years later by Jugnu (1947), where he built the decade's biggest soundtrack around Noor Jehan and this same singer — which makes a modest, badly preserved 1945 solo one of the earliest traces of that pairing.

By Arunkumar Deshmukh's Hindi Film Geet Kosh-based account, Mohammed Rafi had recorded only two solo songs before Sharbati Ankhen; this one film gave him three at once — the largest allocation any producer had yet made to him.

The film's title is a piece of love-poetry vocabulary rather than a plot detail: sharbati aankhen are eyes the pale amber colour of sherbet.
