The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Balam Ji Ye Kya Jadoo Dara' is the best-remembered song from S. M. Yusuf's 1944 film Aaina, and the one most often cited in surveys of the year's music. It is a light romantic duet pairing Zohrabai Ambalewali — one of the dominant female playback voices of the early 1940s — with Gope, the rotund comic actor who also sang several of his own screen numbers. The Aaina music is credited jointly to Fateh Ali Khan and Gulshan Sufi; the song sits comfortably in the playful, dialogue-like duet tradition of wartime Hindi cinema.
The Music

The duet is built on a brisk, hummable refrain that hands the melody back and forth between the two voices — a structure suited to Gope's comic delivery against Zohrabai's fuller, more trained timbre. Like much of the Aaina score, the arrangement keeps the female playback voice forward, reflecting the dominant sonic texture of mid-1940s film music before the post-Independence playback revolution.
