Fred Gaisberg recorded approximately 500 matrices during his six weeks in Calcutta. These were not just Gauhar Jaan and Saila Bai — he recorded dozens of artists performing in Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, and other languages. The wax discs were shipped to Hanover, Germany, where they were used to create stampers for pressing shellac records.
Many of these original wax matrices have been lost or destroyed. Shellac records — the commercial products — are fragile: they crack, they warp, they deteriorate. And for decades, nobody thought to preserve them systematically.

In 2011, Suresh Chandvankar founded the Archive of Indian Music (AIM) with a simple but urgent mission: locate, acquire, digitize, and preserve the earliest Indian recordings before they disintegrate completely. Working from a modest setup, AIM has recovered thousands of recordings, including many from the 1902 sessions.
The digitization process involves playing the fragile shellac discs on carefully calibrated turntables, recording the output at high resolution, and then using digital signal processing to remove the surface noise, clicks, and pops that accumulate on 120-year-old records. The result is a window into a vanished world — the actual voices of musicians who lived and performed in the age of the Raj.
What We've Saved, What We've Lostगौहर जान की सबसे प्रसिद्ध रिकॉर्डिंग बची हैं और डिजिटाइज़ की जा चुकी हैं।

Gauhar Jaan's most famous recordings have survived and been digitized. Several are available on SoundCloud, Google Arts & Culture, and streaming platforms through Saregama's reissue program. But many lesser-known artists — singers whose names appear on crackling shellac labels but whose stories have been forgotten — remain unheard.
The Archive of Indian Music, the British Library's sound archive, and private collectors continue the work of recovery. Each newly discovered disc is a small miracle — a voice from 1902, preserved in the grooves of a fragile black disc, speaking across the centuries.
