Based on Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay's Bengali novel 'Bisher Dhoan', it follows a widow and the moral knots of a joint family — Kishore honours a promise to protect his late friend's widow, Bimala, while society watches and whispers. It was a 'social' of the late 1930s, where the household itself was the stage and the family the drama.

The socials of this era pulled the song down from court and stage and seated it in the courtyard. Bhabhi's music was composed by Saraswati Devi — one of Hindi cinema's pioneering women music directors, who had worked for Bombay Talkies since 1935. Here songs were not spectacle but mood — the heaviness of the monsoon, the ache of separation, the emptiness of a house. Dialogue and lyrics came from J. S. Casshyap, keeping word and story tuned to one key.

On screen, Renuka Devi played Renu and P. Jairaj played Kishore; Maya Devi took the role of Bimala, with Meera as Bela. Cinematography was by Joseph Wirsching and Pareenja. The film opened on 17 December 1938 at Bombay's Roxy Talkies. Its songs — the monsoon numbers above all — lingered in memory for decades, proof of how deep even the plain music of the household could reach.
