Qaraar (क़रार) is the opening track of Sukoon (2022), Sanjay Leela Bhansali's debut non-film music album, sung by Shreya Ghoshal and set to a 19th-century Urdu ghazal couplet by Momin Khan Momin — 'Woh Jo Hum Mein Tum Mein Qaraar Tha' — a verse famously associated with the ghazal tradition and made iconic in past decades by singers including Begum Akhtar. Released via Saregama on 30 November 2022 as part of Bhansali's nine-track album conceived during the pandemic-era production halt of Gangubai Kathiawadi, the song reimagines a centuries-old sher through lush semi-classical arrangement — sitar, sarangi, tabla and harmonium woven by arranger Raja Pandit — anchored by Ghoshal's restrained, aching vocal delivery. It quickly became one of the most streamed tracks from Sukoon and the piece Ghoshal has spoken about most personally, associating its recording sessions with her pregnancy.

Bhansali built Qaraar around a spare, classical palette — sitar (Bhagirath Bhatt), tabla (Prashant Sonagra), harmonium (Pradeep Pandit) and sarangi (Liyakat Ali Khan) — arranged by Raja Pandit and programmed by Kunal Pandit, deliberately keeping the production uncluttered so the ghazal's poetry and Ghoshal's voice carry the track. The composition leans into slow, deliberate phrasing typical of the ghazal form, giving Ghoshal room to stretch and ornament each line rather than rushing through a conventional song structure, a choice consistent with Bhansali's stated aim of making classical-adjacent music 'accessible to millennials.'

The lyric is drawn from a real, famous 19th-century Urdu sher by Momin Khan Momin — 'Woh Jo Hum Mein Tum Mein Qaraar Tha' — a couplet long treasured in the ghazal canon for its economy: it names no event, no betrayal, only asks, almost rhetorically, whether the other person remembers the calm understanding that once existed between two people. That ambiguity — is it a lament, a taunt, a genuine question — is the poem's enduring appeal, and Bhansali's album leans on this borrowed classical gravity rather than commissioning new verse for the opening track.

Sukoon was Bhansali's first venture into stand-alone, non-film music, conceived during the COVID-19 production halt of Gangubai Kathiawadi. He described it as an attempt to curate a ghazal album 'accessible to millennials and young listeners,' inspired by artists he grew up on — Lata Mangeshkar, Begum Akhtar, Mehdi Hassan and Jagjit Singh — and dedicated it as an ode to that lineage. Qaraar, placed as the album's lead and opening track, was recorded with Shreya Ghoshal while she was pregnant with her son Devyaan; she has since said the song became one her son associates with calm, and that he does not fall asleep without hearing it.

Qaraar became one of the most-streamed and most-discussed songs from Sukoon, helped by its status as the album's opener and by Shreya Ghoshal's public, personal anecdotes about recording it during her pregnancy — a story that circulated widely in entertainment press coverage of the album's release. As part of Sukoon, it contributed to an album that critics praised for its 'composition, instrumentation, setting and soundscape,' positioning Bhansali as a credible non-film music composer beyond his film scores.
