Overview

This is perhaps the most celebrated Purab-ang thumri recording of the 20th century — certainly the most iconic performance by Rasoolan Bai. A Holi thumri set in Pilu, it uses the festival's spirit of playful abandon to explore the nayika's emotional vulnerability: she asks her beloved not to throw flowers at her because they fall on her heart. The metaphor of the flower as love's weapon is so precisely calibrated — tender, funny, painful at once — that it has become the defining statement of what thumri can do with a simple image.

The Music

Pilu's mixed quality — neither fully major nor fully minor, with both shuddha and komal variants of the same swaras — makes it the perfect vehicle for thumri's emotional multiplicity. Rasoolan Bai's bol-banao in this recording is a masterclass: she takes 'phool gendwa na maro' and over several minutes draws out every possible shade — playful, coaxing, pleading, resigned — without the text changing a syllable.

The Poetry

The Holi thumri tradition uses the festival's license — when social hierarchies suspend and colours fly — to explore the romantic. The 'flower of marigold' thrown by the beloved is simultaneously the physical flower and the beloved's attention, which is at once desired and too much to bear.

The Story

Rasoolan Bai's recording made this text famous across India — before it, the song existed as a local thumri repertoire item. After it, the song became so identified with Rasoolan Bai that subsequent singers performing it have always lived in comparison with her. Padma Shri 1957.

The Legacy

Pilu is a mixed raag containing both shuddha (natural) and komal (flattened) variants of the same scale degrees — its tonal ambiguity between major and minor modes makes it the natural vehicle for thumri's simultaneous playfulness and tenderness.
